Prayer for Depression

Updated: Jun 20, 2021

In my distress, I prayed to the Lord and the Lord answered me and set me free. (Psalm 118:5)

Father, we thank You for Your goodness and faithfulness. You are all-seeing, all-knowing, all- present and all-loving. You promise us in Your Word that You will never leave nor forsake us and that You will be with us in trouble and always, even to the end of age. You are with us, ever so close, wooing us to come to You, all who labor and heavily burdened and You promise to give us rest. (Matthew 11:28)

You are the Light in the darkness but in times of depression, it’s so hard to see You. We know that You are with us but it’s hard to feel You. We know You inhabit the praises of Your people but it’s hard to praise You. We know that we are to pray and not doubt but it’s hard to muster up the strength to pray and believe You for our breakthrough. Lord we believe, please help our unbelief.

Gracious Father flood our hearts with hope and grant us Your overwhelming peace. Lord, be the Lifter of our heads. Lead us out of this deep darkness into Your marvelous light.

You encourage us in Your Word that when we are bowed down, feeble, utterly crushed and groan from the anguish of our hearts that our sighs are not hidden from You. (Psalm 38:9) Not one of our tears misses Your all-seeing eye.

As David cried out to You we ask You to have mercy on us for we are weak. Our souls are greatly troubled. But You, O Lord deliver us! Oh, save us for Your mercy’s sake. We are weary with our groanings. All night we make our bed swim. We drench our couches with our tears. Our eyes waste away because of grief. (Psalm 6:2-6) Our sorrow seems to be continually before us. But in You, O Lord we hope; You will hear, O Lord our God.

Hear our cry O God; attend to our prayer. From the end of the earth, we will cry to You. When our hearts are overwhelmed lead us to the Rock that is higher than us. You have been a shelter for us, a strong tower from the enemy. Instead of the darkness give us the strength to abide in Your tabernacle forever and trust in the shelter of Your wings. (Psalm 61:1-4)

Father in the midst of this battle whether it’s ongoing or whether it comes in waves of darkness and sadness, help us to release the guilt that often accompanies it. You know our frame and Your mercy is everlasting.

As much as we may desire to be alone and isolated by Your Spirit help us to look to You and to reach out to someone who will pray for us and come alongside us to help us. As much as we want to be inactive help us to get up and do something productive. As much as we don’t have a hunger for Your Word help us to push through and feed on the manna You have provided for us to be nourished and strengthened. With You a little goes a long way. As much as we don’t feel like praying help us to pray. No prayer is too small; I echo, with You, a little goes a long way. When our strength gives out Your grace and perfected power kicks in.

We are reminded in Your Word that when the righteous cry out, You hear and deliver us from all of our troubles. You are a Strong Deliverer and Mighty Healer! You heal in so many awesome and personal ways. Your ways are not our ways so we ask that You lead us by Your Holy Spirit.

You are near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit. (Psalm 34:17-18)

We tear down every argument and every presumption set up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:5)

Where we are hopeless refresh us with overcoming hope! Where there is torment pour out Your perfected love, overwhelming peace, and matchless power! Where there is sin purge us with hyssop and we shall be clean, wash us and we will be whiter than snow. (Psalm 51:7)

Help us not to believe a lie for the truth. Only what You say about us is true! Help us to not fall for the harassment, deception, lies, and accusations of the enemy. he is a known liar and a master accuser and we will NOT believe anything he says! We are comforted that when the enemy comes in like a flood, Your Spirit will lift up a standard against him! (Isaiah 59:19b)

Lord, we submit to You right now and resist the devil and he must flee! (James 4:7) There is no God like You, who rides the heavens to help us! The eternal God, You ARE our refuge! You will thrust out the enemy before us! (Deuteronomy 33:27) When we are weak You are strong! (2 Corinthians 12:10)

For You are our lamp O Lord; You shall enlighten our darkness. For by You we can run against a troop. By You we can leap over a wall! Your way is perfect; Your Word is a shield to all who trust YOU! (Deuteronomy 3:18) Your Word is a lamp and light to our feet that lights our paths out of the darkness.

We stand on Your Word, “Surely He has born our griefs and carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God and afflicted. The chastisement for our peace was upon Him and by His stripes we are healed. (Isaiah 53:4-6) Thank You Jesus! You ARE our HOPE! Hope in You does not disappoint! In You is life and the life is the Light of men. (John 1:4) You declare, "The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. (John 1:5) Glory to God!

Only You can pull us out of the horrible pit and the miry clay and set our feet upon the rock, our defense. (Psalm 40:2) We shall not greatly be moved! (Psalm 62:1,2) Only You can turn our mourning into dancing and our sorrow into joy! Weeping may endure for a night BUT joy comes in the morning!! Hallelujah!

We give all our burdens to You. You WILL take care of us. You are a Faithful Father. We wait quietly before You, for our victory comes only from You. (Psalms 62:1) We adamantly refuse to give up! We receive and rest in the finished work of the cross. We put on the full armor of God that we may be able to stand and after done all, to STAND in the grace and power that You provide. In the faithful name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

The Lord has heard our supplication. The Lord will receive our prayer. (Psalm 6:9)

Hang in there. God will demonstrate His faithfulness. It is my prayer that His measureless grace will strengthen you and give you renewed hope, fresh oil, and supply your every need as you trust in Him.

Holding you near in my heart and in my prayers,

Shannon
